Am 16. März 2008 jährte sich zum 20. Mal der Giftgasangriff der irakischen Armee auf das irakisch-kurdische Halabja. Dabei kamen bis zu 5.000 Menschen ums Leben, viele Tausend wurden verletzt und leben bis heute mit den gesundheitlichen Schäden. Am 13. März 2008 veranstaltete die Bundestagsfraktion ein Treffen zum Thema. Mehrere Gäste berichteten über den Hergang der Angriffe auf die kurdische Stadt Halabja durch die irakische Armee unter Saddam Hussein.
